Ik luister de laatste weken bijna non-stop naar BNN-live (alleen maar live performances, zoals de naam al doet vermoeden – link) en zojuist kwam er een live-versie voorbij van “Stupid Things”, uitgevoerd door Boris Titulaer. (Winnaar Idols 2004)

Ik heb niet echt kunnen achterhalen van wie het origineel is. Ik vermoed Robin Thicke (Youtube-link)

Boris zet een heerlijke versie neer bij Pauw & Witteman in 2006:

Ik heb sinds de dood van Freddie Mercury alle comebacks, remakes, musicals en nieuwe zangers zorgvuldig ontweken. Deze hoorde ik voordat ik er erg in had, maar ik ben toch wel een beetje van onder de indruk.

In my quest for perfect cover bands, I did not end up with some vague Polish band tonight, but Pink! Her version of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody is truly sublime. Not so much as in covering Freddy’s vocals in this song, because that part is -let’s be honoust- really not that complicated if you listen carefully, but the performance of the band and backings. Simply brilliant. Freddy would approve!

Let’s get nostalgic and start the new category “Whatever happened to…” Let’s find out whatever happended to our childhood ‘heroes’! Shall we?

Feargal Sharkey (Sean Feargal Sharkey, Derry, Northern Ireland, August 13th 1958) first founded fame as the lead vocalist of pop/punk band The Undertones (founded 1976), and was famous for the hit single “Teenage Kicks”. (Huh? In 1976 I was still attached to my umbilical!)

The band split in 1983 due to some musical differences, with Feargle Sharkey pursuing a solo career and the rest of the band forming “That Petrol Emotion” the following year.

“A Good Heart”, the song we all remember Sharkey by, went to #1 in several countries in ’85. Something most of you don’t know is: “A Good Heart” is actually a cover! 19-Year old Maria McKee wrote it back in ’83, and even performed (and flopped) it live:

Back to: Whatever happened to:… In the early 90′s Sharkey moved into the business side of the music industry, as an A&R for Polydor Records. In October 2008, he became head of UK Music, an umbrella organisation representing the collective interests of the UK’s commercial music industry.

Die muziekavonden op school vroeger waren zooo suf. Ik zou willen dat ik zo’n moment had als die meid op de achtergrond @ 00:43. 13 Jaar en zo’n stem,…

Een live-uitvoering van een song vind ik echt een graadmeter van hoe goed een muzikant en/of band nou daadwerkelijk is. Niets is frustrerender dan een plaat door-en-door kennen en dan live, zowel muzikaal als zangtechnisch enorm teleurgesteld worden. Vooral het laatste is mij diverse malen overkomen met bands als Kane en The Counting Crows, dik 10 jaar terug, toen ik nog wel eens naar concerten ging Zowel Dinand als Adam maakten (maken?) er een potje van op live-gebied.

Whatever-happened-to….. Craig David? Geen artiest die echt thuishoort op RN, maar na het zien en horen van dit live-optreden verdient hij onder mijn naam wel een plekje met deze uitvoering van Sting’s Rise & Fall.
